WU LYF

WU LYF, an acronym for World Unite Lucifer Youth Foundation, was a bit of a mystery in the music industry. This quartet band from Manchester, England, burst into the music scene in 2010 with their unique blend of indie rock and lo-fi genres, combined with their raw, often indecipherable vocals. It felt as if they were playing a secretive game with their fans; choosing to let their music and unique marketing strategies, like liberating private gigs for those who bought their £50 t-shirts, speak for them. Their cryptic yet captivating style stirred up a decent amount of interest within the indie community.

The video for “We Bros,” one of WU LYF's signature tracks, optimizes well this sense of raw and youthful fierceness the band was known for. Director Sam Pilling managed to capture this furious energy within the band's performance amid cuts of teenagers charging across cityscapes, which did not just capture attention but also encapsulated the band’s uncanny ability to connect with disenfranchised youth all over the world. Meanwhile, say about the music video for "Go Tell Fire to the Mountain", their debut and only album, the band created an engrossing narrative, complementary to their music. After only a year together, the band disbanded while priding themselves on being known as “the band that broke up on their own terms”. Despite the split, WU LYF left its unique mark within the music video industry, bridging cinematography and great indie rock sound.
