Wintergatan

Wintergatan is a fascinating Swedish multi-instrumentalist, best-known for his intricate and extravagant mechanical music machines. While the name belongs to the artist, it's more suitable for the band that comprises of four musicians, who notably complement the ambient genre with innovative and homemade instruments. Martin Molin, the mastermind behind Wintergatan, has been a gamechanger in the music industry with his idiosyncratic approach to sound mixing, equal parts fascinating and purposeful.

Molin's music videos are miniature spectacles in themselves. The most renowned video, "Marble Machine", has clocked over 150 million views on YouTube. It showcases a wonderful contraption, a hand-cranked machine that uses 2000 marbles set in motion to strike various instruments including a bass, vibraphone and drums. What's gripping about the video is that it blurs the lines between a music performance, mechanical art and a compelling physics demonstration. Another intriguing video, "Star Machine 2000", sets a galactic theme using a handmade music box and a self-built modulin—something Molin refers to as 'a kind of Frankenstein's violin'—against a starry backdrop.

An interesting titbit about Molin is that when he set out to build his Marble Machine, he estimated it would take two months. Two years later, he admitted that he had seriously underestimated the project - an admission made with the machine still incomplete. His passion for perfection is nothing less than captivating and a testament to Wintergatan's beautifully obsessive artistry.
