Emerging from the vibrant swirling nebula of Britain's indie pop scene, The Death Of Pop was a four-piece multi-genre band that proved to be almost as elusive as they were effervescent. Their sound was a mixture of shrill guitar riffs, dreamy synthesizers and vocals that seemed to glide effortlessly between melancholy and manic. The band was also known for its self-deprecating take on bubblegum pop nostalgia which made them more relatable and endearing to their loyal fanbase.
Their charm was not only evident in their music but also in their music videos which were interesting narratives blessed with a degree of idiosyncrasy. One such example is the video for their hit single "Like Always". It features the band members solemnly performing against a glaringly white backdrop, interspersed with eerie muted visuals of a bobbing watermelon and a teetering tower of unwashed dishes. The band members, who also self-directed the video, said the watermelon represented "the unbearable lightness of being". Whether this quirkiness contributed to their increased appeal or created a diverse fan base is up for debate. As unique as they were, The Death Of Pop quietly disbanded in 2018, but their discography and peculiar videos still echo in the annals of indie music.
