Sigur Rós

Icelandic post-rock band Sigur Rós exists in a realm of their own in the music industry. Incorporating a blend of ethereal soundscapes, melodic bowing of electric guitars, and hauntingly beautiful lyrics often sung in a constructed language, they've become an icon of uniqueness amidst an increasingly predictable music scene. They were able to carve out a niche for themselves and inspire a wave of post-rock bands to imbue their music with atmospheric textures and orchestral elements that have since marked much of the genre.

Their 1999 music video of 'Svefn-g-englar' is a testimony of their artistic craft. Co-directed by Sigur Rós and August Jakobsson, the video featured a special Icelandic sporting team whose members all had Down syndrome. Thence, they discovered an interesting fact; that Down syndrome individuals could swim in ice-cold water without getting hypothermic due to an additional chromosome. This led to Sigur Rós releasing 'Glósóli', another masterpiece shot in the volcanic landscapes of Iceland. The video captures the naive hopes and dreams of children on the edge of adulthood, concluding with a leap of faith that embraces the unknown, much like how the band’s avant-garde music did in its heyday. Sigur Rós' videos always carry an unexpected yet pleasing surprise, not unlike finding an extra mitten during Iceland's brutal winter.
